The Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification System
is a good air purifier for a medium size room. It works well in a master bedroom or den. It is very similar to other Blueair models but cleans a much larger room. It can cleans a room up to 365 square feet.
The 403 has a normal filter and an ionizer. The ionizer gives the particles a charge. Then when the particles pass through the filter they stick to the media. This filtering system can remove up to 99.97% of airborne particles 0.1 microns and bigger from the air. It removes dust, dust mites, pollens, and other allergens.
This filter has larger holes in it than a normal HEPA filter does. This means the fan works less. And we all know that the less work a fan has to do, the quieter it is.
An optional activated carbon, called a smokestop, filter can be used. It removes some of the gases, chemicals, and odors from the air.
To really remove odors or chemicals see Austin Air, IQAir, or AllerAir air purifiers.
The Blueair 403 has an expected filter life of 6 months. The mechanical filter must be replaced.
With the regular filter the yearly upkeep cost is $120. Using smokestop filters will increase the upkeep to $240.
This will clean an area of 365 square feet. In a room a little smaller you can get better results. This air purifier will clean an open area 20 feet by 18 feet. It will work well any living room, dining room, or any larger open space.
It is certified by AHAM with a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of:
It will provide 5 air exchanges per hour.
There are 4 fan speeds. The lowest speed is very quiet. The higher speeds will clean a lot of air cut it is noisier.
The 403 measures 20 inches X 11 inches X 22 inches (L X W X H). It weighs about 33 pounds.
It comes with a 5 year limited warranty on material and workmanship. The filter must be replaced every 6 months or the warranty is void. Blueair has a filter subscription service. They will automatically ship you a new filter every 6 months.
This is a good air purifier. It can clean a larger room. It will work in any room in your house. You can put it in the living room, dining room, or a bedroom.
We like the activated carbon filter. It will remove some gases and odors. However, if smoke and odors are you primary concern, we would recommend a different air purifier.
The maintenance cost is a little on the high side. To keep the warranty you have to replace the filters twice a year for $120 or more.
Overall, we think you would be happy using a Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification System in your house.
